Handmade pottery are beautiful, unique pieces that add a distinct personality to any home or office. However, it’s important to care for them correctly to make sure they last for many years to come. Here are some tips for preserving your handmade pottery pieces:

  1. Cleaning: Use a soft, damp cloth or sponge to clean your ceramics. Avoid using abrasive cleaning products or scrubbers, as these can scratch and damage the surface of the pottery. If a piece is particularly dirty, you can wash it gently with mild soap and water. Rinse it thoroughly and dry it with a soft cloth.
  2. Temperature: Handmade ceramics should be able to handle the heat if you consider that the kiln they were made in typically gets to 1800 degrees fahrenheit. However, taking a piece and putting it under thermal shock it is not advised.
  3. Handling: Ceramics can be fragile and should be handled with care. Avoid holding them by the rim, as this is very often the most delicate part of the piece. Instead, hold them by the base or handle. When moving a ceramic piece, hold it securely and support the bottom.
  4. Displaying: When displaying ceramics, be sure to place them on a stable, level surface. You want to avoid stacking them on top of each other, because this can cause scratches and chips. If you have to stack them, put a soft cloth or piece of foam between them.
  5. Storing: When storing ceramics, place them in a cool, dry place. You should avoid damp or humid areas, because the piece can absorb moisture and develop mold or become misshaped. If you must store ceramics in a damp area, place them in a plastic bag with a desiccant to absorb the moisture.
  6. Repairs: If a ceramic piece becomes damaged, take it to a professional for repairs. Trying to repair it yourself can cause further damage and devalue the piece.

By following these tips, you can make sure your handmade ceramics are well-cared for and will last for many years to come. Remember that each piece is unique and may have special care instructions, so be sure to consult with the maker or a professional if you have any questions.
