About Your Potters

Amy and James Howard make up Pottery by Howards

For our 9th wedding anniversary, James got us pottery lessons at the Cary Arts Center. That was when we found something we both can do that was a natural outlet for our creative sides. We do this as a hobby but it’s one we are passionate about. We enjoy getting our hands dirty and I personally value the peace and joy that making handmade pottery creates.

Our pottery is all wheel thrown or hand-built. We use varying types of clay, stamps, textures, and carved designs to create interest and add beauty to each piece. Glaze combinations are endless and James likes to experiment to find the perfect blend of colors.

Once the clay is turned into a functional pottery piece, it is bisque fired to over 1800 degrees in a kiln. Then the piece is glazed and fired to over 2100 degrees. Occasionally, we do something a little special like raku, horsehair, or saggar firings. These create really special pottery pieces that are fun to create and great to look at.

Every piece of pottery is food, oven, and dishwasher safe unless otherwise stated on the piece itself. We create most of our ceramic pieces from the Cary Arts Center in downtown Cary where we live. There are times, however, when we go on a “pottery retreat” where we do nothing but make pottery pieces for an entire week. Now that’s my idea of a good time.
